In a significant achievement for the Western Cape, the region’s MEC for Finance and Economic Opportunities, Mireille Wenger, has heralded the acquisition of eight prestigious World Travel Awards as a positive development that promises to invigorate the province’s economy.
Among the standout honorees, the Cape Town International Airport emerged as the leading airport on the African continent, drawing international attention and bolstering the region’s standing. Equally noteworthy, Cape Town itself received accolades as Africa’s foremost destination city. In addition to these distinctions, the city’s cruise ship terminal and a selection of luxury hotels received top rankings, cementing the Western Cape’s reputation as a global tourism hub.
MEC Wenger expressed her elation at the international recognition of the province’s remarkable offerings and underlined the potential for these awards to catalyze a successful summer peak season. She remarked, “The closer we get to our summer peak period, the more reasons we have to expect a record-setting season. This is very exciting because the tourism and hospitality sector contributes significantly to our economy and especially to job creation in the Western Cape.”
James Vos, the City of Cape Town’s Mayco member for Economic Growth, shared in the enthusiasm, asserting, “We will work around the clock to build on the gains we have made in growing a tourism industry that is boosting employment and investment opportunities.”
The Western Cape’s remarkable achievements at the World Travel Awards not only showcase its tourism prowess but also promise to have a tangible, positive impact on its economic landscape.
