First-ever lantern parade to light up Sea Point

by InnsCape

Cape Town’s first-ever lantern parade will soon light up the streets of Sea Point during a procession of handmade recycled lanterns. The lanterns will use LEDs to light up their unique designs and treat locals to a glowing show.

This first-time event aims to foster the spirit of unity in the Cape community as well as allow creatives a new outlet where they can produce unique works of art in lantern form to parade along some of Cape Town’s most iconic streets.

Bright handmade lanterns of all shapes and sizes will take to the streets on Saturday, January 11 from 7pm. The event conceptualised by youTM only allows for eco-friendly paper lanterns that strictly use LEDs as an illumination source for safety reasons. Lanterns that use candles or fire as an illumination source are not allowed as they pose a huge danger to the Cape’s natural environments.

The parade will begin at Sea Point Pavilion Pool and will continue on one way along the Promenade ending at Mouille Point Beach on Beach Road, approximately 3km in total.

From 7pm the Best Individual Lantern, Best Group Lantern and Most Creative Lantern will be judged before the winners head the parade at 8pm.

Participation in the event is free and those looking to watch the parade are welcome to bring along a chair and watch from the sidewalk. Those looking to make a lantern for the parade are encouraged to do so too.
